Satoshi Kurosaki's Ortho is a residential project that stands out in its design and execution. The inspiration for the project came from the clients' desire to have a home where they could spend meaningful time as a family. They wanted courtyards to play a significant role in their home life. To fulfill this request, Kurosaki made use of the distinctive property shape and topography of the irregularly shaped lot they had purchased.
The unique properties of Ortho lie in its exterior, defined by two massive, offset concrete volumes with a board-formed finish. On the main level, a small courtyard and a large garden terrace on the south side serve as intermediary zones. These spaces allow the residents to enjoy the distinctive outdoor environment of a ranch-style home while maintaining their privacy.
The project was completed in April 2020 and is a private housing structure made of reinforced concrete. The total floor area is 410.94 m2, with the site area being 792.67m2. The design period spanned from March 2018 to April 2019, and the construction period was from May 2019 to April 2020.
Ortho is not just a residential project; it's a testament to Kurosaki's innovative architectural design. The design has been recognized and awarded Silver in the A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2021. This award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. These designs, admired for their strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, showcase a remarkable level of excellence and introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
Ortho is a project that perfectly embodies the ethos of APOLLO Architects & Associates, the firm behind the design.
